The original icon (also called Blachernitissa) comes from Constantinople which in turn was copied from a (no longer extant) 4th century icon from Jerusalem. Later during the 12th century the icon was adopted in Russia and named “Of the Sign” for a miraculous sign from the Virgin during a siege of Novgorod. A 13th century icon can be found in St. Catherine's Monastery in Sinai.
